What to know

Nearly 20,000 square kilometres, UNESCO listed for both nature and culture, with rock art at Ubirr and Nourlangie that has been painted and repainted for around 20,000 years. MANY ROADS AND FALLS ARE CLOSED IN THE WET SEASON and Jim Jim Falls in particular is 4WD-only and shut for months. SALTWATER CROCODILES inhabit every waterway in the tropical north, including ones that look nothing like crocodile habitat. Obey the signs absolutely - people are killed most years. Seasons here are the six Bininj/Mungguy ones, not four, and the park explains them well.

When to go

The planner warns of wet in January, February, March, December. Outside those months it says nothing, which is the point — a warning that fires every day is one nobody reads.
