What to know

Burning sulphuric gas that glows electric blue in the dark, in a crater holding the largest acidic lake in the world. YOU START WALKING AT ABOUT 01:00 to be at the crater before dawn, and it is a two-hour climb. A PROPER GAS MASK IS ESSENTIAL, not the cloth ones sold at the bottom - the fumes are genuinely dangerous and shift with the wind. Miners still carry 80kg baskets of sulphur up out of the crater by hand, which is sobering to watch. ACCESS CLOSES WITHOUT NOTICE when the volcanic alert level is raised, sometimes for months. Check the current status before travelling - this is not a formality here.

When to go

The planner warns of wet in January, February. Outside those months it says nothing, which is the point — a warning that fires every day is one nobody reads.
