Highland country where the funeral is the central event of life - buffalo are sacrificed, bodies may be kept at home for months or years before the ceremony, and the dead are buried in cliff faces guarded by carved wooden effigies. VISITORS ARE GENUINELY WELCOME AT FUNERALS but you are attending a family's bereavement: go with a local guide, take a gift of cigarettes or sugar as is customary, dress in dark clothes, and ask before photographing anything. Most ceremonies are July to September.
