Forty-four hectares of Roman city stopped in 79 AD - streets, shops, graffiti, frescoes and the plaster casts. FREE FOR EVERYONE on the first Sunday of each month (Domenica al Museo). Walk-in only on those days - no booking, and the queue is long. ALLOW FOUR HOURS MINIMUM and take water: there is very little shade, few fountains, and the stones radiate heat. Villa dei Misteri is at the far end and most people run out of energy before reaching it.
