Department of Conservation land is FREE to enter. New Zealand charges nothing to walk into any of its national parks. The highest mountain in the country at 3,724m, in a park holding a third of New Zealand's glaciers. Free. THE ONLY ROAD IN IS ALSO THE ONLY ROAD OUT and it closes in heavy snow. The village has one shop and no fuel - fill up at Twizel.
