What to know

The largest glacier in the Alps - 23km long, up to 900m thick, and UNESCO listed. Cable cars from Bettmeralp or the Eggishorn put you on a ridge looking straight down it. It has lost a substantial part of its length in a century and the viewpoints are signposted with where the ice used to reach.
