Bridge over the River Kwai

Kanchanaburi · Kanchanaburi & the western border · Thailand

★★★★☆   Museum & culture

What it costs a family of four

Free

No admission charge for anyone. Parking or transport may still cost.

What to know

FREE. Part of the Death Railway built by Allied prisoners and Asian forced labourers for the Japanese in 1942-43, at a cost of around 100,000 lives. YOU CAN WALK ACROSS IT and step into refuges when a train comes. It is a memorial as much as an attraction and the souvenir stalls at one end sit oddly with that.

When to go

The planner warns of hot in April; and wet in September, October. Outside those months it says nothing, which is the point — a warning that fires every day is one nobody reads.
