What to know

Tokyo's oldest temple, founded in 628, and free - as almost every Japanese temple and shrine is at the gate. Go at 07:00 or after 20:00 and you will have the great lantern to yourself; between 10:00 and 16:00 it is one of the most crowded places in Japan. The omikuji fortune slips are 100 yen in an honesty box, and if you draw a bad one you tie it to the rack and leave it behind.
