THE ISLAND THAT CHANGED WHO CAN AFFORD THE MALDIVES. Since guesthouses were legalised on inhabited islands in 2009, Maafushi has become the budget base - dozens of guesthouses, a bikini beach, and day trips to sandbanks and resorts at a fraction of resort prices. Reached by public ferry for a couple of dollars. THIS IS AN INHABITED ISLAND, NOT A RESORT. Maldivian law applies: no alcohol, and modest dress away from the designated bikini beach.
