FREE, and one of the great drives - 120km from Te Anau through beech forest, alpine valleys and a rough 1.2km tunnel bored through the mountain. THE ROAD CLOSES FOR AVALANCHE CONTROL in winter and spring, sometimes at short notice and sometimes with vehicles held at the tunnel. Carry chains in winter; there is no fuel between Te Anau and Milford.
