Called the finest walk in the world since 1908. 53.5km over four days, one direction only, fixed itinerary. BOOKINGS FOR THE WHOLE SEASON OPEN ON ONE DAY AND SELL OUT WITHIN MINUTES. INTERNATIONAL VISITORS PAY SUBSTANTIALLY MORE THAN NEW ZEALAND RESIDENTS for the huts - see finding 4. Outside the Great Walk season the bridges are removed and it becomes a serious alpine undertaking.
