Widely called the best one-day walk in the world - 19.4km across an active volcanic saddle past emerald crater lakes. THE TRACK IS FREE but PARKING IS TIME-LIMITED AND A SHUTTLE IS EFFECTIVELY COMPULSORY, and since 2023 a booking is required. IT IS AN ALPINE CROSSING, NOT A WALK: people die on it every few years. Seven to eight hours, no shelter, weather that turns in minutes, and it CLOSES when the forecast is bad. Winter attempts need ice axe and crampons.
