New Zealand's first national park and a dual UNESCO site, listed for its landscape and for its sacred significance to Ngati Tuwharetoa. THE VOLCANOES ARE ACTIVE and areas close on raised alert levels. Mount Ngauruhoe played Mount Doom; climbing it is now discouraged as it is sacred.
