What to know

The largest and holiest temple complex in Bali, 1,000m up the slope of Mount Agung - 23 temples on terraces. Survived the 1963 eruption when the lava split around it. IT HAS A LONG HISTORY OF UNOFFICIAL GUIDES AND PRESSURED DONATIONS; the official ticket now includes a sarong and shuttle, so decline anything extra offered on the approach. A sarong and sash are required to enter and are lent or hired at the gate. Menstruating women are asked not to enter Balinese temples, which is stated on signs at the entrance.
