VERIFIED FREE, and open around the clock, which is the key to it. Ten thousand vermilion torii up a mountainside, each donated by a business. THE CROWDS THIN AFTER THE FIRST TWENTY MINUTES OF CLIMBING and disappear entirely at night, when the lower gates are lit. The full loop to the summit is two hours and most people never do it.
