Two stone-stepped lanes of preserved wooden shopfronts running down from Kiyomizu-dera. Free. PHOTOGRAPHY IS RESTRICTED on some of the private lanes nearby and there are fines - the signs are in English. Superstition says a fall on these steps brings three years of bad luck, so the steps are worn and the warning is practical.
