Department of Conservation land is FREE to enter. New Zealand charges nothing to walk into any of its national parks. Rainforest half an hour from the city. MANY TRACKS ARE CLOSED OR RESTRICTED because of kauri dieback disease, which is spread in soil on boots - use the cleaning stations at every entrance and stay on the boardwalk. Check which tracks are open before setting out; the closures change.
