Doi Suthep · Chiang Mai & the northern hills · Thailand
★★★★★ Museum & culture
Wat Phra That Doi Suthep does not publish a fixed price, so this site will not invent one. Check the official page below.
A gold chedi on a mountain above Chiang Mai, reached by 306 naga-flanked steps or a funicular. Founded in 1383 on a spot chosen, according to the story, by a white elephant that climbed the hill and died there. Shoulders and knees covered for everyone, shoes off inside. Sarongs are lent or hired at the gate and visitors are turned away daily for dress. Go at dawn for the monks' chanting and the view before the haze.

The planner warns of hot in April. Outside those months it says nothing, which is the point — a warning that fires every day is one nobody reads.
