UNESCO listed. Steep thatched gassho-zukuri farmhouses built to shed four metres of snow, some of them 250 years old and still lived in. The village is free to walk; individual houses charge. THE WINTER ILLUMINATION IS BY ADVANCE RESERVATION AND LOTTERY on a handful of January evenings.
