Franz Josef · The West Coast & the glaciers · New Zealand
★★★★★ Beach & outdoors
No admission charge for anyone. Parking or transport may still cost.
FREE to walk up the valley to the viewpoint. THE GLACIER HAS RETREATED SO FAR THAT THE VALLEY WALK NO LONGER REACHES THE ICE - it is a distant view, and people who expect to touch it are disappointed. Reaching the ice means a helicopter. The retreat markers along the path are a stark record of the last century. SANDFLIES are a genuine problem on the West Coast and in Fiordland - not a nuisance but a trip-shaping one. Cover up and take repellent.
